None of these lists are anything other than a hopeless attempt to try and keep track of what I may or may not have liked at the time and/or in retrospect. As retrospect will probably get the benefit of my slipshod mindtrap, I’ll try and keep years organized according to the IMDB if I can. I used to have more explanatory exposition here, but forget all that because you know what? I don’t see as many films as most people who call themselves cinephiles. So it’s probably better just to treat this list as a template for further revision and nothing more. I’ve done away with the “honorable mentions” and just decided that if it’s worth mentioning, into the main list it goes. Thus, I’ve cleaned out these lists of many of the “borderline” cases, where I’m not sure I really love certain films enough to list them for any other reason than to make the lists appear beefier than they really ought to be. I’m something of a fan of Dan Sallitt’s color coding system, so I adopted it to differentiate between the flaming masterpieces and the almosts, et al.
Other restrictions: TV movies and miniseries (though not series seasons), short films and even the occasional music video are all fair game for being listed if they strike me as “cinematic,” et al, and there will be no differentiation other than to provide labels for alternate formats. Not lengths, though; it makes about as much sense to ghettoize or label some films for beign “short” as it does others, like La Commune or Le Fond de l’air est rouge, for being “long.” The concept of “feature length” means nothing to me.If you want to see something resembling an even more personal, knowingly idiosyncratic take on my favorite films, look at my “light my fire” 100 (i.e. my “Kiarostami canon,” as per Adrian Martin).
