Ghosts of Mississippi (Rob Reiner, 1996)

Posted by Eric on September 5th, 2003

This might be how the Slick Willie years go down being remembered (or, even worse, like Reiner’s American President), though I hope to God not. Speaking of slick, I think one of the only reasons someone yelled out at my original screening of Ghosts “Whoopi gots a booger up her nose!!!” during the climactic courtroom verdict scene is because it’s the only shot in the film that came close to conveying a sense that the people on the screen were living, breathing, snotting creatures. After over 90 minutes of movie Endust, how could you not notice the noseweb? At any rate, Whoopi’s the only decent thing in here (because her impersonation of Merlie Evers is actually spot on), but Woods’s is certainly the hammiest performance nominated for an Academy Award in the whole 1990s and it’s not even a close contest. I could take it as camp, but something about the subject matter seems to defuse doing so (though that doesn’t explain Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story except to say that Haynes’s film couldn’t be mistaken for anything but camp).
